Story Starter #42: Every year, my friends and I are determined to top what we did for St. Patrick’s Day the year before. This year, we decided there was no better way than to visit Dublin. With it’s marvelous parade through the streets and the plethora of pubs lining the streets, I knew it would be nearly impossible to top this next year. How right I was.

Story Starter #39: She checked over each shoulder, her eyes scanned the store. A security guard was eying three teenage boys who were fooling around near the video games. A store employee was busy explaining to an elderly woman how a smart phone worked, his smile strained as he repeated himself for the umpteenth time.

She’d worn a baseball cap pulled low over her eyes so a security camera couldn’t identify her and, for good measure, had worn a blond wig underneath to hide her fiery red locks, which would surely stand out in people’s minds.

Story Starter #37: Not a cloud was in sight and the only thing disrupting the smooth, vast, sky was the flock of seagulls circling overhead, their beady eyes on the warm sand, hoping to spot an abandoned morsel of food.

The air smelled of salt and suntan lotion and waves crashed along the beach, mingling pleasantly with the whooping and laughter of those enjoying the surf.

He was perfectly happy sitting alone on a sand-covered towel drinking a tepid beer from a can and watching bikini-clad girls lathering each other with sunscreen.

Story Starter #36: The carriage arrived, the horses coming to a halt just inside the intricate wrought-iron fence. The driver of the coach slid from his seat and, without glancing at me, promptly unfolded a set of three steps and opened the carriage door.

Only one foot appeared on the top step. The shoe was dull and scuffed, as if it bore the brunt of its owner’s gait. The other foot was nonexistent, nor was the calf. In fact, my visitor was missing his entire leg below the knee.

Story Starter #36: He tipped his wide-brimmed hat low to hide his eyes. His companions tied off their horses’ reins. His boots kicked up a cloud of dirt. The lookout adjusted the saddlebags as a ruse to see how many potential witnesses were around.

“Ready?” he asked, unbuttoning his duster for better access to his guns

They all inclined their heads and, as one, moved towards the bank, a white marble building shining like a beacon in the middle of a town full of wood and brick construction.

Story Starter #36: Blue and red lights flashed in my rearview mirror like a strobe light as I cut the wheel to the left. Once I cleared the turn, I stepped on the gas pedal. The engine groaned as the car gained speed. The cruiser’s siren blared and cars before me scurried out of the way, as if I were Moses parting the Red Sea.
